Civics test FAQ

Short answers about the test versions, the pass rule, the answers and this site.

Which civics test do I take?

The date USCIS receives your Form N-400 decides. Before October 20, 2025, you take the 2008 test with 100 questions. On or after that date, you take the 2025 test with 128 questions.

How many questions are asked and how many answers pass?

The 2025 test asks up to 20 questions and needs 12 correct answers. The 2008 test asks up to 10 and needs 6. The officer stops early when the result is decided.

What is the 65/20 exemption?

An applicant who is 65 or older and has been a permanent resident for 20 or more years at the time of filing may study 20 marked questions. The officer asks 10 and 6 correct answers pass. The applicant may also take the civics test in the language of their choice.

What changed in the 2025 test?

The 2025 test has 128 questions instead of 100. The officer asks up to 20 questions instead of 10, and 12 correct answers pass instead of 6. The test stays oral. Applicants who filed before October 20, 2025 keep the 2008 test.

Are these the official USCIS questions?

Yes. The question text and the answers come from the official USCIS question documents for the 2025 test and the 2008 test. The data page lists each source file and its checksum.

Are the answers current?

Question answers are fixed except for answers about officials and elections. For those, USCIS keeps a test updates page. We copy the USCIS names and also build a state officials file from public data. Each data file shows its retrieval date. Check the USCIS page before your interview.

Is this site official?

No. examprepare.help is a free study aid. It is not affiliated with USCIS or any government agency or test owner. It is not legal advice.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free. There is no account, no email and no paywall. The site is static, so pages load fast.

Where is my progress stored?

In localStorage in your browser. The practice results, missed questions and your state choice stay on your device. They are not sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data deletes them.

Can I practice the 2008 test?

Yes. The 2008 question set has its own pages and practice modes. Open the 2008 questions page or choose the 2008 set in the practice settings.

Can I print the questions?

Yes. The questions pages have a print button. The printed page has the questions, the official answers and the source note.

What if I do not understand an official answer?

The questions page shows every accepted answer for each question. The source documents at the bottom of each page explain the rule. USCIS is the authority for the test.

Does the site work offline?

Not yet. A future release will cache the pages for offline study. For now, download the official USCIS PDFs for offline reading.

How do I check the answer for my state?

Open the state answers page and choose your state. It shows your senators, representative, governor and capital with the source for each item.
